What is Preselected Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (PICSI)?
It is a very similar method to that of the ICSI only the process of sperm selection is different. In ICSI, the sperm is selected based on the motility and morphology, but in PICSI our physician chooses mature sperm having the ability to bind with hyaluronan microdots. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a sperm binding protein.
PICSI helps in getting the mature and morphologically correct sperm for injection into the egg.
Who are the Candidates for PICSI?
We suggest the PICSI when there is:
- Low fertilization rate even after ICSI treatment
- Compromised embryo development in previous cycles
- Medical history of miscarriage
- High sperm DNA fragmentation
What is the process of PICSI?
Our doctor first screens the sperm by using an HA-binding test on a microscopic slide and then uses them for ICSI. If less than 65% sperms bind to HA on the slide, then we use different PICSI dishes to pick the sperm for ICSI. To perform PICSI 200,000 sperms are required. After selecting the mature and vital sperm, our expert puts them directly into the cytoplasm of the prepared eggs by using the ICSI method.
