What are TESA and TESE?
TESE is a testicular sperm extraction, and TESA is the testicular sperm aspiration. TESA is the procedure that uses a needle to insert into the testis and aspirates the fluid and tissue by exerting a negative pressure. Then we process these tissues into the embryology lab and extract sperm cells for the further use into ICSI. TESA is a simple, quick, cheap and comfortable way of sperm retrieval. Microsurgical Testicular Sperm Extraction (Micro TESE) is a procedure that renders the precise removal of small amounts of testicular tissue from areas of active sperm production using a microscope to improve sperm production.
Who is the candidate for a TESA treatment?
  • A man with obstructive and non-obstructive azoospermia.
  • Those having testicular problems and produces poor quality sperms. That may be due to genetic causes, previous infections, mal descended testes.
  • An irreversible obstruction in the genital tract due to prior infections, trauma or surgery.
  • Inborn congenital disabilities in the vas deferens.
  • A man with a vasectomy or a premature vasectomy withdrawal.
What is the TESA procedure?
In the TESA process, we pass the fine needle through the skin of the patient directly into the testes and withdraw a small amount of the seminiferous tubules. Then we dissect these tubules in the laboratory and check the sample for the presence of sperm. We do the process under the effect of local anesthesia or sedation.
How we use the TESA sperms?
The sperms retrieved via TESA are very low as compared to the sperms present in the ejaculate. So we use these sperms in combination with ICSI (Intracytoplasmic sperm injection). The sperms retrieved by TESA are hardly suitable for intrauterine insemination (IUI).
What is the success rate of TESA?
TESA sperm is a routine procedure of sperm retrieval, and it has a high success rate as that of the IVF/ICSI.
What are the advantages of TESA?

It increases the production of spermatozoa and reduces the amount of testicular tissue. The method allows the couple to have their baby although there are no sperms present in the ejaculate.
